The Santa Fe Railway Argonne Marshalling Marshalling Station tests a device that is capable of performing ultrasonic flaw detection on the wheels in motion. Named Wheelfax, this device uses electronics and is small in size, 5.5 in width and 8.5 in length, housed under a special 30-foot rail with two ultrasonic transducers. When a defective wheel passes, the Wheelfax system generates an audible or visual signal, either recorded on a magnetic tape or spray-coated on a defective wheel, or by an automatic copy numbering device. Tests have shown that the device is reliable and capable of detecting flaws at a speed of 30 mph (48 km / h). Currently, this device can only detect whether a wheel is defective or not, and is studying other devices that can indicate defects on wheels Specific parts.
