美国人皮特·弗莱明曾经说过,世界上最好的双打组合,就是约翰·麦肯罗和他的搭档。这话也可以被理解为是弗莱明对自己的一种恭维,因为在麦肯罗夺得绝大多数双打冠军的时候,站在他身边的人就是弗莱明。如果说麦肯罗和弗莱明是上世纪80年代最具统治力的男双组合,进入90年代,一对来自澳洲的“兄弟”则传承了他们的霸业。伍德布里奇和伍德福德与麦肯罗颇有渊源,可以说这对组合是被麦肯罗促成。他们“统治”男双赛场的时间更长,地位更稳固,而且至少在冠军数量上超越了所有前辈。我们现在怀念双伍兄弟十年前的辉煌经历,也许就如同十年后想起费德勒今天的光荣岁月。他们不会在网坛史册中拥有和费德勒同等的地位,但他们在双打赛场上同样达到了成绩前无古人,比赛内容也许后无来者的高度:进入21世纪,越来越多的双打选手开始依靠大力发球或底线强抽“简单”地赢得比赛,像双伍那样,将双打变成精巧艺术的“求道者”已经濒临绝迹。
American Pete Fleming once said that the best doubles mix in the world is John McEnroe and his partner. It can also be understood as a flattering compliment to Fleming himself, because at McEnroe he won most of the doubles titles, Fleming stood beside him. If McEnroe and Fleming were the dominant doubles teams of the 1980s, into the 90’s, a pair of brothers from Australia inherited their dominance. Woodbridge and Woodford have a lot to do with McEnroe, arguably the pair was promoted by McEnroe. They dominated the men’s doubles for longer, more solid positions, at least surpassing their predecessors in number of titles. We now miss the brilliant experience of Shuangwu Brothers ten years ago, perhaps reminding us of the glorious years of Federer today just ten years later. They do not have the same status as Federer in the history of tennis, but they also achieved the same result in doubles. The content of the competition may not be as high as ever. In the 21st century, more and more doubles players rely heavily on Serve or bottom line pumping “simple” to win the game, like the double Wu, doubles into sophisticated art “Dorsett” has been on the verge of extinction.
