In the summer of 1999, after studying in the United States for five years, I returned to my hometown of southern Kyrgyzstan and married a lover in high school. In the previous year we were engaged in a traditional way and then I returned to Washington University in Seattle to continue my studies while my fiancé Ali remained in Kyrgyzstan’s capital Bishkek and continued in the army
