1 18世纪行将结束的最后那几个年头里,法国的拿破仑还没有当上皇帝,正领兵远征埃及。故事就发生在埃及的沙漠里。2这年的一个夜里,一头全身皮毛金黄十分漂亮的成年母豹正忍着饥饿,回到它的洞穴里来。3它的窝就在不远那座土丘的背面,那里有一个天然的岩洞,看上去就像是从花岗岩岩石中凿出来似的。洞里很是干净,洞外及土丘的周围长着不少绿绿茵茵、郁郁葱葱的棕榈树和沙枣树。4唔,这是什么味儿?母豹放慢了它那特有的轻捷而柔软的步子,用鼻子使劲嗅了嗅。对,这是血腥味,一阵新鲜的血腥味。果然,它看到一匹刚刚咽气的棕色马。
