As we all know, the Indian Ocean tsunami incident in December 2004 not only made countless people homeless, but also damaged the virgin forests in Southeast Asia. For people in China’s wood processing industry, this is also a shock and concern. Little did they know that the policy of the new Indonesian president after he assumed office in October of the same year and the rise in oil prices were the main reasons for the increase in timber prices in Southeast Asia. However, the Indian Ocean tsunami incident served as a catalyst for the apparent increase in timber prices in Southeast Asia. China not only lacks the forest industry, but also has some factors such as low quality of forest products and serious loss of forest land, which also accelerates the import of timber in China. Due to the gradual scarcity of wood in Southeast Asia, the wood processing industry in China has to seek new wood instead of merbau. The increase in the price of imported logs has put our country’s wood processing industry into competition. In addition to the demand for timber in the flooring industry, the construction and furniture industry in China is also a big consumer industry. Only for the high-profit products made of imported wood—furniture—the current rise in imported wood will not have any impact.
