The 4th International Conference of Oceanography (ICHO Ⅳ) was held in Hamburg, Federal Republic of Germany from September 23 to September 29, 1987 with about 120 participants. China sent for the first time four delegates to the conference. The first session of the history of international oceanography was held in Monaco in 1966. Although a small country, Monaco has a world famous marine museum (founded in 1911). The second session was held in 1972 in Edinburgh, England. The 3rd session was held in Woods Hall, the United States in 1980. Here is the world famous Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (founded in 1930).
