初级卫生保健主要是指社区水平的治疗和预防的综合性卫生服务.在发展中国家通过遍布的初级卫生保健组织,为5岁以下的儿童提供了卫生保健.这种服务形式有效地降低了儿童的发病率和病死率,使很多发展中国家有限的卫生资源,发挥了较大的效益.一份来自尼日利亚的资料表明,加强5岁以下儿童的保健对降低儿童发病率和死亡率有着十分重要的作用.目前,此项工作已成为发展中国家的主要卫生策略之一.
