Volume III, Volume 5, Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, provides rules for the construction of high-temperature reactors, including HTGRs and liquid metal reactors (LMRs). These rules apply to components in excess of the volumes in Volume 1 as well as ferritic materials at or above 700 ° F (370 ° C) or austenitic stainless steels at temperatures equal to or above 800 ° F (425 ° C) or high Nickel alloy parts. More importantly, Book 5 also contains new rules for graphite core assemblies. These new rules include the general requirements for graphite, design and construction rules. In addition to the probabilistic design features reflected in the graphite’s intensity characteristics, the new rules also include the effects of irradiation on graphite.
