The American Journal of Environmental Science and Technology, 1995, June 6, Mexico City, Mexico City, due to over-exploitation of groundwater, caused the water level in southern urban areas to drop by 1 m per year while sinking the surface of the urban area. In some areas, the groundwater level dropped to 5 cm per year. The fall of the ground has also caused the formation of clay to crack and pollute the groundwater. The pace of industrialization and urbanization in Mexico City has far exceeded the rate at which municipalities can build water and wastewater treatment facilities and citizens are facing serious problems with the health of groundwater pollution.
