Objective To investigate the applicability of Zung’s self-rating anxiety scale and depression self-rating scale in evaluating inpatients with cardiovascular disease. Methods A questionnaire was used to investigate the general information, anxiety and depression self-rating scales of 209 hospitalized patients. The applicability of the two scales was discussed by item analysis, correlation analysis and reliability analysis. Results The incidence of anxiety and depression in the survey subjects were 27.3% and 34.0%, respectively. The Cronbach’s α coefficient of self-rating anxiety scale and depression self-rating scale were 0.803 and 0.814 respectively. Four items in the anxiety self-rating scale had low correlation with the total standard score (r <0.4), and eight items in the depression self-rating scale had a low correlation with the total standard score (r <0.4). Cronbach’s alpha coefficient increased after two entries were deleted from both scales respectively. Conclusions Although the two self-rating scales are simple, easy to grasp and widely used, the results of the present study confirm the poor applicability of the two self-rating scales to anxiety and depression in hospitalized patients with cardiovascular disease. Or be used with caution.
