Nearly two thirds of the Tarim Basin’s area (330,000 square kilometers) is covered by deserts, known as the Taklamakan Desert. The “Taklamakan” Uyghur language means “going in and out” and is regarded as “the sea of death.” In the past, the petroleum exploration in the Tarim Basin was mostly carried out at the periphery of the basin, while the desert coverage area was basically a geological blank zone. To speed up oil exploration in the Tarim Basin, in January 1982, CNPC contracted with Geophysical Services (GSI) to purchase a full set of desert equipment from China and hire GSI professional and technical personnel to carry out seismic-gravity exploration in the desert area. 1983
