1956年3月11日下午,數学競賽委員会举行了第三次數学通俗講演会,請中國科学院学部委員苏步青講“非歐幾何学。”苏步青先生首先講了非歐幾何的產生。他說:二千多年前,希腊數学家歐幾里得總結了在他之前的一些數学研究成果,用当時認为最科学的方法編寫了“幾何原本”,这本書的內容和現在中学的幾何課本大致相同,在这本書里,歐幾里得引入了第五公設,在他之後的很多數学家都想証明它,但是都沒有成功,後來罗巴切夫斯基提出了新的理論,否定了第五公設,於是,罗氏就在他的定理的基礎上建立了非歐几何学,接着,他講了非欧幾何学和歐氏幾何学的關係,最後,他簡單的介紹了幾何学基礎,並詳尽地說明了公理系統。
