In Colorado, only 8% of soils in soil samples analyzed by the Soil Science Laboratory at State University have a slight potassium deficiency. From 1977 to May 1984, 4-9% of potash was sold in Colorado, and most of the remaining potash was bought in counties with high or very high levels of potassium in the soil. The role of potassium in plants has been linked to cation transport among cell membranes, water conservation, energy metabolism, and enzyme activity. Duke et al. (1980) pointed out that the fourth-generation Vernal alfalfa had the largest total nodules and the fastest reduction of acetylene when K_2SO_4 applied at a rate equivalent to 673 kg K of potassium per hectare per year. clover
