Call of the Wild is a classic novel by Jack London. The novel portrays Buck’s fascinating story of transforming from a pampered pet dog to a pack leader. This paper uses the theory of motivation psychology to analyze the process of Buck’s transformation in The Call of the Wild and focuses on the decisive influence of different motives on Buck’s inner impulses and extrinsic behavior. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that motivation, as the underlying psychological mechanism for managing, organizing and stimulating organism behavior, is undoubtedly the underlying cause of the organism’s transformation. Buck’s long and arduous journey of self-transformation is also the process of its long and complex exploration of diverse motives. This interdisciplinary approach not only provides a new perspective for interpreting “call of the wild,” but also reveals human motivation from the side.
