霍桑生活在一个清教家庭,受其家庭背景的影响,他创作了《红字》这部长篇小说。这篇小说的主题、人物和象征意义历来受到许多学者的争议和赏析。而作为19世纪最重要的浪漫主义派作家,霍桑的伟大正在于他能以表面温和而实质犀利的笔锋暴露黑暗、讽刺邪恶、揭示真理。[1]他强调人性本善,忏悔和善行能够弥补过失,增长见识。在《红字》中,他刻意使主要的三个人物面对罪行时选择了不同的态度,从而得到了迥然不同的结果,揭示了罪行、救赎和认知三者间的关系,借此来表达他的人生观。
Hawthorne living in a Puritan family, influenced by his family background, he created the novel “The Scarlet Letter”. The theme, characters and symbolism of this novel have always been controversial and appreciated by many scholars. And as the most important romanticist writer of the 19th century, Hawthorne’s greatness lies in his ability to expose the darkness, satirical the evil and reveal the truth with a gentle and sharp sharp surface. [1] He emphasized that human nature is good, and that repentance and good deeds can make up for mistakes and increase their knowledge. In the “Scarlet Letter”, he deliberately made the three main characters choose different attitudes toward crime, and obtained very different results, revealing the relationship between crime, salvation and cognition, in order to express His outlook on life.
