ABB has secured a major contract that will provide European General Motors with more than 200 industrial robots. This is part of a major investment in General Motors’ new production equipment for its plants in Belgium, Germany, Sweden and the United Kingdom. At least 120 of them are installed in the Vauxhall car factory in Luton, UK, and most of them are IRB6000 series robots, which are mainly used for spot welding and were delivered in 1994. This is ABB’s major breakthrough in European General Motors. In defeating the Japanese competitors to win the contract, the cost-effectiveness of the ABB production line has played a key role. The wide range of engineering services it provides and the strong local support in each country is also one of the factors to win. The ABB branch office in Milton Keynes, UK, is responsible for the project management of Luton robot installation work.
