Residents of tropical countries often have multiple parasites simultaneously infected. It is now known that an infection or antigen stimulation may affect the immune response of another infection. For example, MacGregor et al. (1962) first discovered and confirmed by Greenwood (1974) that malaria infection reduces the humoral response of tetanus toxoid. Whether or not schistosomiasis reduces the immune response to another antigenic stimulus is unknown, so the authors tested mice for inoculation of Schistosoma mansoni to determine the effect on the immune response to tetanus toxoid. Results: The antitoxin potency and uninfected anti-toxin in mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni after tetanus toxoid injection in immature adults (within 3 weeks after inoculation of cercariae)
