我生长在梨园世家,七岁开始学戏,与我的姑父——茹富兰学的第一出戏是《石秀探庄》。那时,我每天天不亮就起床练功,然后步行到姑父那学戏。在家里,父亲叶盛兰常常让我在炽热的太阳底下穿着棉袄练《八大锤》,冬天则只穿单褂练。我家的生活条件比较优裕,但父亲从不让我们坐享其成,而是鼓励我们刻苦练功,努力学习。后来我进入了中国戏曲学校(现中国戏曲学院)学习。那时的戏校没有现在的条件好,但老师的要求很严格,翻跟头,撕腿,都得按要求练,不准有一点折扣。有时下腰下到半截就想直起身来,老师就在身上压一个堂桌,使之起不来躺不下,慢慢地由不自觉到自觉,养成了练功的习惯。一九六二年,我在艺术上还刚刚起步,著名表演艺术家俞振飞老师就收我做了他的学生。我父亲对俞老师也非常钦佩,对我说:“我们搞京剧的一定要打下很好的昆曲基础。不但要学昆曲,就是对其他剧种,
