他是世界首肯的绿色建筑评价标准LEED的创立人。在他眼里,一幢建筑是否环保的标准之一就是能否做到功能多样化。他毫不掩饰对国家大剧院、三号航站楼等知名建筑的批评态度。他不能理解许多中国新建筑总是以西方建筑为参考模本。他直言,中国的建筑师们似乎忘了中国拥有5000年的建筑历史,“许多建筑与自然结合得很好,为什么他们不多去找找这方面的案例呢?”

In his eyes, one of the criteria for whether a building is environmentally friendly is its ability to diversify its functions.
