Vocabulary is one of the most important linguistic features of the traditional genre-based pedagogy that fosters academic literacy in the field of ESP. The lexical phrases examined in this paper include two types: one is general type, such as lexical bundles, lexical clusters and formulaic sequences in vocabulary studies and linguistic studies; the other is Specific type, that is, the vocabulary phrases used in the specific writing steps of academic articles, both of which are necessary for students to construct academic texts. However, previous researches on these two types of lexical phrases tend to have a tendency to be more neglected, and they lack the exploration of the two types of phrase lexicon acquired by students under the framework of the Genre Law. This article is a case study of two vocabulary phrase acquisition processes and an integral part of academic writing teaching programs at institutions of higher learning in southern China. The study aimed at students of different levels of English for one semester of academic English genre writing teaching. Through the analysis of students’ rewriting, genre analysis, weekly interviews and study records, they found that their awareness of vocabulary phrases has been significantly improved, and many vocabulary phrases have been used in writing training. In addition, it is also found in the rewriting task that students have different modes in terms of the source of acquisition, the usefulness of perception, the quantity of phrases used and the suitability of usage when using general and specific vocabulary phrases . This research will provide useful enlightenment to the teaching and learning of academic lexicon in higher education.
