我校举办本科班已有8年历史。但是，本科学员的英语水平一直未达到大学英语四级要求。随着生源的变化，我们严格按照国家教委颁发的《大学英语教学大纲》的要求，狠抓英语基本功训练，在重视语言能力培养的基础上提高学员的交际能力，充分发挥“教、学、管”三方面的积极性，取得了比较明显的效果。我校于1996年6月首次参加了全国大学英语四级考试，96．7％的学员顺利通过考试，其平均成绩为73．68分，这两项指标均大大高于全国参加四级统考院校的平均值。
