卫天霖是我国近现代著名的油画家教育家和理论家。他早年留学日本,师从外光大师黑田和藤岛,充分吸收了印象派和后印象派特色。此外,他结合中国民间艺术色彩,尤其将中国书法中的线条、章法融入到他的作品中,从而形成他的独特艺术风貌。卫天霖的艺术同中国文人画一样,从心境到表现无不显示平淡、天真。“言不尽意,立象以尽意”卫天霖是用艺术的语言说出了他积于胸中的郁闷,作画成了宣泄其情绪的最有力的工具。他的作品更多地体现了他心灵上的孤独与精神上的伤感。
