Most of the interest in fiber optic gyroscopes has focused on aerospace applications, with a particular focus on small missile guidance applications. However, at an optical fiber sensor conference in New Orleans, an article opens up a new world for fiber optic gyros. Engineers at Hitachi Cable Co. and Nissan Motor Co. reported the first test of fiber optic gyros for vehicle guidance. Experiments confirmed the potential of fiber optic gyroscope applications in the car.
