The Pricaspian Basin, located in the southeastern part of the Russian Platform, has a thickness of 20 km of sedimentary formations, including the Lower Paleozoic, Permian salt and Mesozoic and Cenozoic terrestrial salt formations. The giant reservoirs in the basin are mainly concentrated in the Upper Paleozoic carbonate reservoirs. Geologists generally believe that many of the small reservoirs that have been discovered in the Mesozoic strata originate from the transport of hydrocarbon fluids from deeper sub-salt formations to salt formations. The analysis shows that the geochemical characteristics and compositions of hydrocarbon fluids in the salt upper layer are similar to those in the salt sub-layer. The reservoirs in the sub-salinity deeper than 6 000 m are further exploration targets and the location of the reservoir in the sub-salinity reservoir can be determined by analyzing the geochemical characteristics of salt and continental salt sediments. The distribution of post-salt sedimentary profiles can help predict the undetected reservoirs in deep Paleozoic carbonate rocks.
