The US Federal Railways Office of Research and Development passed a research project to develop a track surface and underground rock movement survey system. The system uses a variety of remote sensing equipment to collect data, combined with other special line data to provide support for long-term monitoring of orbital characteristics. The mobile survey system is a modular structure that is suitable for a wide range of platforms and successfully utilizes the High Precision Differential Global Positioning System (HADGPS) technology to measure the orbital surface coordinates at different speeds with a precision of up to centimeter. The mobile system was used for data acquisition in several geologically weak sections of West Virginia railroad lines. In order to store and display data from field trials and to facilitate the integration of other geospatial information, a state-wide Internet-based geographic information system (GIS) has also been developed. A long-term comparative study of monitored rail routes in West Virginia with the latest high-capacity (terabyte) information technology systems. In order to evaluate the application of the system, the system is also used in other states for curved orbit movement measurement, derailment analysis and railway station field survey.
