蕃茄,亦称西红柿,或称洋柿子(足见其籍贯不是中国)。大约一百多年前,它曾有个很坏的声名——“狼桃”——人们误以为吃了它就会毙命。因此,它的用途不过是种植在宫廷的花园里供人观赏而已。后来,一位画家不听邪,渴极了就吃将起来,谁知不但未毙命,反而尝到了蕃茄那酸甜可口的滋味。从此,“狼桃”交了好运。误解和偏见冤屈了世上许多好事物。以世界上两大“热门”的体育项目之一——拳击而论,那种谈“桃’色变、望“桃”生畏的心理并没有完全消失。特别是在我们的一些同胞中,至今对拳击尚有两大恶諡,一谓“残酷”,二谓“野蛮”。
