Sustained economic growth and its uneven distribution throughout the world are the most important characteristics of the present-day world. They illustrate the changing relative strength among nations, the coexistence of unprecedented wealth and continuing poverty, the nature of modern warfare, the rise of democracy and the frustration felt by most of the Islamic world. In the past 200 years, real income per capita in the world’s richest countries has been raised at least 20 times. In fact, much more to be promoted. This growth was faster in the twentieth century than in the nineteenth century and faster than in the second half of the twentieth century.
