“季”原来是“末”的意思,旧时指农历一个季度的最末一月。季春、季夏、季秋、季冬分别指农历的三、六、九、十二月。“孟”和“仲”分别指某一个季度的第一个月和第二个月。一个季度是三个月,按“孟”“仲”“季”的次序,“季”便成了“三”的同义语。古时作战,又常把军队分为前军、中军、后军。后军排在第三,即为季军。约定俗成,“季军”也便成了第三的同义语。所以,人们常把比赛中的第三名称为季军。
“Quarter” is the original meaning of “end”, the old one refers to the last month of the lunar quarter. Ji Chun, Ji Xia, Qiu Qiu, Ji Dong respectively refers to the lunar calendar three, six, nine, December. “Meng” and “Zhong” mean the first month and the second month of a quarter, respectively. One quarter is three months. According to the order of “Meng”, “Zhong” and “Ji”, “quarter” becomes synonymous with “three”. In ancient times, the army was often divided into the former army, the army and the latter army. After the military ranks third, that is third runner-up. By convention, “third place” has become synonymous with the third. Therefore, people often put the third title in the race as third place.
