红葡萄又称大红球、红地球、晚红,粒大、色艳、丰产、耐贮运、优质高产,原产美国,栽培居美国鲜食葡萄第三位,出口量第一位。中国香港的葡萄市场一直被其占领。1987年由美国引入中国,1994年通过品种审定,目前我国市场上的红提主要依赖进口。我国葡萄在水果生产中的比重较小。1995年栽培面积和产量仅占全国水果总面积和总产量的1.9％和4.1％,面积不足世界葡萄总面积的2％,产量仅占3％,并且以巨峰系中熟品种为主,这导致了市场供应空缺,上市期短,而优质高效的红提可实现葡萄周年供应。
