眉县商业园艺场(现第五村公社园林场)和眉县苗圃地处关中平原西部,渭河南岸,年降雨量575毫米,极端最高地温65.8℃,最低-13℃,无霜期149天。1973年春,眉县农副公司在这里开始进行毛竹种子育苗试验,面积1亩,播种3.6斤,种子出苗率为16.7％,共出苗15,000余株,入冬前(11月)有苗11,600株,越冬后(3月)存苗11,300株。越冬前,最大苗高56厘米,一般高30厘米左右。实生竹苗一年分蘖4—6代,一株分蘖最多为9株,一般为4—6株。今年3月中旬开始发笋,5月初最大苗高70厘米,一般高30—40厘米,苗色翠绿,生长茁壮。
