Objective To explore the relationship between chemical elements and gastric cancer by detecting the chemical elements in the hair of residents with high and low incidence of gastric cancer. Methods A total of 103 residents of Changle City in the high incidence area and 102 persons in Fu’an City of low incidence area were randomly selected from the high and low incidence area of gastric cancer in Fujian Province. Plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS) were used to analyze the data using nonparametric rank sum test. Results The contents of 9 elements of Co, Hg, Mn, Ni, Se, Sr, Cu, Zn and Sn in hair of healthy residents with high incidence of gastric cancer were significantly higher than those in low incidence areas (P <0.05) (P <0.05). There was no significant difference in the contents of Ba, Cd, Cr, Pb and Fe among healthy residents in both places. Conclusion The microelement load of residents in high and low incidence areas are different. The high content of As and Mo in the body may play a protective role for residents with low incidence of gastric cancer.
