Singapore is an island nation in Southeast Asia composed of more than 50 islands in and around Singapore Island. It covers an area of only 622.6 square kilometers, has a population of less than 3 million and has a poor natural resource. However, Singapore has enjoyed an average annual economic growth rate of 9% over the past 28 years since its independence in 1965, and its national income per capita has increased nine-fold. In 1990, Singapore’s GDP reached 57 billion U.S. dollars and its per capita GDP reached 12,000 U.S. dollars. As a small country such as Singapore, why the economy can achieve rapid development in a relatively short period of time? The main reason for the effective combination of market economy and planning and coordination, social stability and good social order.
