A large body of literature over the last decade has demonstrated that smoking has a detrimental effect on health. Although the exact mechanism by which smoking causes lung cancer is only a corollary, many of the bioactive compounds inhaled during smoking are mutagens of priming and malignant growth. This article aims to obtain data on the effects of smoking on sister chromatid exchange (SCE) and chromosomal aberrations in blood lymphocytes in order to clarify previous findings on this issue. In addition, this article also collects some information for the future study of the genotoxicity of environmental factors in the workplace.
