魏长生作为乾嘉时期秦腔表演艺术家的历史地位早有定论,但最近学术界突然有人对此产生怀疑。有人说他所唱是一种与秦腔不同的所谓“西秦腔”,也有人说他是唱一种名为梆子腔实为吹腔的。这种看法又生发开去,甚至得出乾嘉时期风行北京剧坛,代表花部诸腔与雅部昆曲争胜的梆子腔,不是秦腔而是吹腔。这样看来,确认魏长生所唱为何种声腔,已经不是一种简单的辨误工作,它直接关系到如何评价秦腔的历史地位、如何恢复戏曲史上秦腔本来面目的重要问题,因此,实有必要为之一辩。对魏长生唱腔产生怀疑的原因有二。其一是由吴太初《燕兰小谱》中如下一句话引起的: 友人言:蜀伶新出琴腔,即甘肃调,名西秦腔。其器不用笛笙,以胡琴为主,月琴副
