钻探始于凿井、汲卤,发展至今已应用于地质、冶金、煤炭、石油、建材、农业等部门的勘探和开发矿产资源,也应用于国防、水电、铁道、邮电、建筑、地震、海洋等部门的多种工程。目前更多的钻探方法在发展(如各类冲击迴转钻进、反循环钻进、震动钻、螺杆钻、柔杆钻等),金刚石钻探也在不断发展和完善。在各类钻探方法中,金刚石钻探在国外目前仍占主导地位,主要原因是:其一,有些新方法虽然效率高,但成熟程度不及金刚石钻探,配套水平不高,设备价格高;其二,是别的方法钻进千米以上的深孔远不及金刚石钻进。金刚石钻探仍然是地质工作现代化的组成部分,必须进一步的全面开展金刚石钻探磨料及钻头、钻机及附属设备、钻具及取心工具、测试仪器及仪表、钻进工艺及冲洗液等方面的研究工作,不断完善金刚石钻探的技术水平和提高技术经济效果。
