The Chemical Bulletin, 1982, published a letter from a reader who mentioned that “fluorite is famous for its ability to fluoresce, so named after the firefly.” This reminds me of the question: is it fluorescent or fluorescent in the end? The translation of the word fluorescence in Chinese and its use in Chinese textbooks is extremely confusing. According to my investigation, the book on the use of (or translating) the word fluorescent is: [1] edited by Chen Guozhen, fluorescence analysis, Science Press, 1975 April first edition. [2] Wang Yushan translation, atomic absorption spectrophotometry, Science Press, March 1975 first edition. [3] Zheng Yili and other co-editor, Pocket English-Chinese Dictionary, Commercial Press, December 1959 first edition.
