A erococcus urinae (A. urinae ), a catalase-negative, Gram-positive coccus, is a newly-emerged pathogen in clinical and microbiological practice, which was first reported in 19891 and designated in 1992.2 Most infections occur in the urinary tract, especially in elderly with local or systemic predisposing conditions such as diabetes mellitus, malignancy, urethral stricture or prostate hyperplasia. 1,3,4 A. urinae has also been associated with bacteremia and endocarditis, 5,6 soft tissue infection,7 and balanitis.7 Here we report an unusual presentation with intense and progressive leucopoenia and a severe course of septicemia caused by A. urinae . To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of an A. urinae infection from Turkey.
