One of the most pressing feasible measures for sustainable forest management is to evaluate the full benefits that forest resources can provide. The framework of Total Economic Value (TEV) was applied to peat swamp forests in the northern part of Selangor and the overall economic value was estimated for a range of alternative management options. This study uses a variety of methods, such as market price method, cost avoidance damage method, replacement cost method, and production function effect method. Findings The agronomic, local and national economies are well-positioned to shift to advanced, sustainable forest management practices. In order for more sustainable programs to be actually adopted, new international financial mechanisms are needed. However, for Malaysia or any developing country, it is unwise to wait for an international transformation before pursuing a sustainable path, especially as such wavering diminishes the resources and economic base of its own country.
