六、英国罗虚戴尔公平先锋社是凝结近代合作思想的光辉典范 世界上第一个成功合作社,公认是1844年英国的罗虚戴尔公平先锋社。罗虚戴尔公平先锋社诞生之前,英、法各国早就建立过一些合作社。例如1760年英国伍德威彻和查特赫姆两地的码头工人为反对面粉厂主垄断面粉价格,以合作社为基础开办两个面粉厂;1761年英国苏格兰芬纽克村的纺织工人曾经创设购买机梭及其他用品的合作社;1777年英国葛文地区组织起食品供给合作社;1828年金威廉的门生在不来敦创立消费合作社等。在这以前的七十年间,英国曾经出现过四五百个合作社,但都因经验不足,组织不善,加上受到英国工会失败等影响,多是昙花一现。同期法国也出现过一批合作社,都未取得成功。因而,

In the past 70 years, there were four or five co-operatives in the United Kingdom. However, they were mostly short-lived because of their lack of experience, their poor organization and the failure of British trade unions. In the same period, a number of cooperatives also appeared in France, none of which succeeded. thus,
