During the debate on whether or not to merge with Scotland in England in the early 18th century, the “pen and ink war” of the merger and the opposition played an important guiding role in the public opinion. Daniel Defoe, a secret spy with the government of England, was sent to Scotland several times between 1706 and 1712 to gather information and conduct a merger. Defoe succeeded in fulfilling the mission of the government of England. His support for the merger came from his patriotic passion for England and his compassion for the fate of Scotland. It also reflected the urgent need of the emerging bourgeoisie to promote the capitalist economic development of the two countries through mergers Interest demands.
