姜立夫(1890～1978),17岁入杭州府中学堂(杭州中学前身)学习,三年后考取庚款留学生,1911年9月入美国加州大学学习,获理学学士学位后,入哈佛大学研究院学习,毕业后留校当助教,1919年获博士学位后回国担任南开大学教授,独立创办算学系,兼系主任.头三年,系内只有他一位教师,其后十多年中,系内最多也就两三人,他既要教理科各系微积分,还要上分析、代数、几何三个方面八门主要专业课和选修课.为此,他的学生陈省身把南开算学系戏称为“一人系”.
