The temperature distribution on the rake and flank faces of two ceramic cutting tools when machining 1045 plain carbon steel and 302 stainless steel were measured by a thermal video system. After the data-processing of experimental results, the obtained temperature distributions were in good agreement with the theoretical calcula tions. A new method of measuring temperature of ceramic cutting tools has been developed successfully The results presented are important for determining the cutting parameters, lengthening the tool’s life and exploring the wear mechanisms.
