High-dose mebendazole alone or in combination with levamisole had a slow-onset insect-resistant effect on microfilariae and embryo development of Onchocercia. However, it was also reported that combination of the two drugs was not superior to placebo. This difference may be related to the poor water solubility of mebendazole. Mebendazole citrate with good water solubility, the authors reported levamisole once or twice daily with mebendazole citrate treatment of 20 cases of onchocerciasis results.
