About 200 million people worldwide suffer from visual disabilities and about 50 million of them are blind. Nine out of every 10 blind people in the world live in developing countries. In fact, about 60% of blind people live in sub-Saharan Africa, China and India. There are about 5 million blind people in China, ranking first in the world. The total number of blind people in China has already exceeded that of other countries such as Denmark, Finland or Norway. About 450,000 people in China are blind every year, which means that there will be a new blind every few minutes. If the current trend continues unchanged, it is estimated that the number of blind people in China will increase by four times by 2020. “Vision 2020” is to eliminate the main cause of blindness by 2020 and to change the situation that the number of visually damaged people may double by 2020. Blindness can cause tremendous suffering to patients and their families. Making blind people see the light is not only the gospel of the blind but also the long-term goal of the medical community.
