贝壳是海岸带沉积物中最常见的物质之一,同时也常常以不同的完整程度保存在古代沉积岩中。贝壳在海岸带中的分布方位是随机的,但是,某种贝壳因共特殊的几何形态,而具有一定的水动力学特征,使共沉积方位与海岸线的走向之向具有特殊关系。所以,沉积岩石学工作者,往往可以根据保存在沉积岩中的贝壳存在的方位,推断当时的海岸线走向及其水动力条件等某些沉积环境特征。
Shell is one of the most common sediments in the coastal zone and is often preserved in ancient sediments to varying degrees. The distribution of shells in the coastal zone is random. However, some shells have some hydrodynamic characteristics due to the special geometry, which makes the co-depositional orientation has a special relationship with the direction of the coastline. Therefore, sedimentary petrology workers can often deduce the characteristics of certain sedimentary environment such as the current coastline and hydrodynamic conditions according to the existing orientation of shells preserved in sedimentary rocks.
