Introduction Anselm Kiefer, one of the neo-expressionist artists in Germany, is quite an obscure one. The reason why his works are hard to understand is that viewers can not easily identify the connotations directly. In its image, the artist always hides the content of the work behind the image in a symbolic or transcendental way, and rarely directly expresses the narrative. As far as the theme of the work is concerned, Kiefer’s work is deeply rooted in the historical context of its own ethnic group, Germanic culture, perhaps in the face of the local cultural context (eg Germany, Northern Europe, etc.)
