创刊初期《农业机械》杂志创刊于1958年7月1日,当时我国的农业机械化刚刚迈步,处在农具改革阶段。为了总结并推动农具改革,《农业机械》杂志应运而生了。开始杂志由中国农机学会筹委会主办,科学出版社出版。当时只有沈美洁一名编辑,出版业务由科学出版社鲍建成负责,两个人办起了一个半月刊。编辑部设在北京农机化学院中国农机学会办公室内。学会办公室孙喴同志忆及创刊的情景时,感慨地说,当时如果没有王震副主席的支持,杂志也不会有今天。因当时中国农机学会正在筹备中,没有经费,是王震副主席
