In high-power CO 2 laser lenses, excessive absorption can result in degraded laser system performance, which can result in broken lenses. All lenses have some absorption, but it is the manufacturer’s responsibility to produce the lenses with the lowest absorption. Once the lens is fitted with a laser system, contamination of the working environment will increase absorption and shorten the life of the lens. The heavy cost of unplanned downtime due to lens damage can often be prevented. All lenses will absorb a small amount of incident laser light. The new lenses are inherently absorbent and some are controlled by the manufacturer. Absorption occurs at the coating, liner-coating interface, surface and substrate. Most high-power infrared materials (such as ZnSe) basically absorb small. The total absorption is usually dominated by coating and surface absorption. Innovative film design can be plated with the minimum absorption rate plating
