In this paper, the effects of different surface strengthening methods (ball rolling, ultrasonic treatment and diamond leveling) on the surface quality and service life of P6M5 and P9K5 high speed steel tools were studied. Surface quality is assessed by the surface hardness, the microhardness and the residual stress size, the fine crystal structure and phase transition studies, and the kinetics.
