Tampa, USA: Smoking alone can increase the risk of stroke by as much as 30%. This is based on data from the Framingham Heart Disease Study. Combined with other factors, smoking can increase the risk of stroke by almost 90%. At the annual meeting of the American Heart Association’s Stroke and Cerebral Circulation, researchers analyzed a wide range of clinical reports, confirming a multi-year argument that smoking is a separate risk factor for stroke. Philip Wolf, a professor of medical research and neurology at Boston University School of Medicine, said that the current relationship between smoking and heart attack is clear, but why is it hard to prove the relationship between smoking and stroke? It is a paradoxical and puzzling question. There are enough cases of stroke to prove that; more than 70 cases have been reported in the Framigham study. The Wolf Study Group looked at the data of 4255 Framingham residents who followed for 26 years and conducted a new statistical analysis. Through this study, 64 of the 566 men who did not smoke smoked in stroke in 1981 and 157 out of 1,268 smokers smoked.
